Biography of Abu Zayd 'Abd Ar-Rahman Ibn Muhammad Al-Akhdari

Abu Zayd 'Abd Ar-Rahman Ibn Muhammad Al-Akhdari, born in Biskra (Algeria) around 1514 and died around 1550, he is part of the Arab tribe of scientific and religious al-Akhdariya. In particular, he left works in verse devoted to astronomy, a calendar that will serve as a reference for scholars in North Africa.

A Malekite jurist and renowned logician, he is the author of a treatise on logic in verse entitled as-sullam (the ladder), which he wrote when he was twenty-one and whose he wrote the comment 'sharh as-sullam' himself. He is also the author of al-jawhar al-maknun fi ath-Thalathat funun (the hidden jewel), still in verse, dealing with rhetoric, a work commented by Ibrahim Ibn Abi 'Alaq at-Tuzari at Tunusi. He also composed ad-Durra ad-Bayda'fi husn al-Funun wa al-Ashya' which he himself commented on.

The author of Shajarat an-Nur said about him: 'He is the jurist, the supreme scholar, the sheikh, the pious, the being of spiritual realization, the perspicacious, the gifted for science. He has to his credit famous writings and memorable wonders.' Isma'il Basha reports, in his idah al-maknun, from the author of the ta'rif al-Khalaf bi-rijali as-Salaf: 'He is a virtuous, ascetic and scrupulous scholar. He is very learned both in ma'qul (rational). His works were very well received by both novices and educated people.

Al-Akhdari is the author of al-mukhtassar (the summary) better known as mukhtassar al akhdari. He essentially deals with the rules inherent in prayer according to the Maliki rite. It is an eminent work that is studied in Maliki countries and even in countries where Muslims are a minority.
