Ayyuhâ Al-Walad (O my son), by Imâm Abû Hâmid Al-Ghazâlî (Arabic Version)

Ayyuhâ Al-Walad (O my son), by Imâm Abû Hâmid Al-Ghazâlî (Arabic Version)

Ayyuhâ Al-Walad (O my son) is a letter from Imam Al-Ghazâlî to his disciple.

An advanced student was the disciple of the Sheikh, the Imam, the Shard of Religion, the Argument of Islam, Abu Hamid Muhammad Ibn Muhammad Al-Ghazali may God have mercy on him. This student occupied himself with learning and acquiring knowledge from his master, until he had managed to master the details of each science, and to acquire the moral virtues. One day, he meditated on his existence and said to himself: "I have studied various categories of sciences and I have spent the flower of my age in learning and acquiring them. Now I must know which category will be useful tomorrow and will keep me company in my grave, and which is useless so that I abandon it. The Messenger of God peace and blessings of God be upon him said indeed: "O God! I take refuge with You from a useless knowledge". This idea never ceased to haunt him until he decided to write to the Master, Argument of Islam, Muhammad Al-Ghazâlî may God have mercy on him to ask his opinion, ask him questions, beg him for advice and invocations. He wrote: "Although the works of the Master like the Ihyâ' or others contain the answer to my questions, I would have hoped that the Master would answer my request in a few pages which I will keep and apply the rest of my life, God willing." The Sheikh wrote him this letter in response, and God is the Most Knowledgeable”

The author Al Ghazali gives advice there, answers certain questions but is silent on others which come under the science of intuitive unveiling, an area that Ghazali and most of the Masters of the Way prefer to avoid because of the misunderstanding could elicit their comments. Indeed, some truths must be lived and cannot be described. It is therefore by respecting, as usual, the rules of propriety, and by implicitly inviting others to do the same, that Ghazali responds to this disciple and urges him to conform in spirit and truth to the teachings contained in the Koran and in the Prophetic Tradition, these two essential sources from which every true believer must continually draw.
