Maria: A Morisque in the Catholic Hell, by Renaud K., Collection Romans, Sarrazins editions
1608, a year before the expulsion of the Moriscos from Spain. María is 16 years old, she works in a seigniory in the region of Valencia alongside her father, a former alfaqi who once traveled through Spain to spread Islam clandestinely. They must be discreet and live their religion in the greatest secrecy. But the Inquisition prowls and falls on his father. Fleeing into the woods as he is about to be burned, she falls, faints, and wakes up with no memories left.
Alone, recluse in a sheepfold out of sight, María survives, but she is awakened every night by words and parables that come to her mind. It was the Qur'an, which she had memorized earlier, that surfaced to her. The young Morisque wonders and wants to know more about her, and especially about these "revelations" that reach her. But for that it will have to return to the harsh reality of its time, a time when Catholic Spain fought fiercely against the latest manifestations of Islam on its soil.
