Know that every aspect of human nature, introduced by Allah, is intended to benefit him. Some desires can facilitate the attainment of what is useful, such as the desire for food. Other desires help repel what could cause harm, such as the capacity to feel anger. However, when the desire for food becomes excessive, it turns into harmful gluttony. Likewise, uncontrolled anger can become harmful. The objectives of this book are to apply the principles of sound reason and righteousness to the mind and heart, to channel desires to avoid their harmfulness, and to deal with passions that run counter to the principles of intelligence and righteousness.
