The great sins ( Al-kabaïr ) by Mohammad ben Ahmad ben Osman Az-zahabi, FR-AR bilingual book (Original Arabic text and French translation), Dar al-Kotob al-Ilmyah edition
The ulemas (May God cover them all with his mercy) affirm that the number of the great sins is not determined in the tradition in a precise way. When asked if they numbered spet, Ibn 'Abbas (may God be pleased with him) replied: They can reach seventy and even seven hundred, it is reported.
When the Prophet (s) says that there are seven major sins, he means seven among the major sins and not that they are limited to seven. This is confirmed by the other hadiths, where he says respectively that there ' has three and four. So this number is not limiting or exclusive.
The scholars differ on the legal penalty to be imposed on the guilty of a major sin and on its distinction from a minor sin. Ibn 'Abbas argues that anything that God has declared forbidden constitutes a great sin if one comes to commit it. This is also the opinion of Master Abu ishaq al-Isfarayini, the Shafi'i jurist and authorized doctor, among other things, in matters of methodology of law (usul) and jurisprudence (fiqh).
Having been established that the sins are divided into venial and mortal, it nevertheless remains that there is a very large and wide divergence on their determination. It is reported, in this regard, that ibn 'Abbas (May God be pleased with them all) said: "The mortal sins are all those which God (Exalted be he) punishes on his part by damnation in hell, wrath, curse or punishment. A similar opinion is supported by al-Hassan al -Bassri.
This was a brief overview of the criteria for defining or determining the great or mortal sin.
