Al-Ikhlâs Wa At-Taqwâ Sincerity and Piety in Islam by Osman Nûri Topbaş
The two most important dimensions that give meaning to human life are piety (at-taqwâ) and sincerity (al-ikhlâs). Piety consists in curbing the desires of the flesh and enhancing the spiritual potential through prayers to Allah and the performance of good deeds towards mankind. Therefore, godliness is needed in every area of life, in our faith, in our worship, in our dealings with others, even in every breath movement we make. To have piety, or to be pious, is to be a friend of Allah Most High, to possess a spiritually sound heart in this world, to be able to take lessons from the divine manifestations of power which are in the universe and to receive the merit of entering Paradise by divine grace.
In other words, to acquire sincerity and piety is to purify our inner world from all kinds of existing spiritual illnesses, thus enabling our heart to enjoy prayers and works that are in accordance with the divine will. Such a state of mind is described in the following Quranic verse: "Surely he succeeds who purifies himself" (Quran, AL-Ala, 87:14)
