Many believed that he was a pirate or a brigand only seeking wealth and all sorts of plundering. In fact, Khayreddin Barbarossa was a real hero, a mujahid, and a conqueror whose biography was unfamiliar to most people.

He protected Africa from the Spanish Empire's plan to expand there. He managed to unify entire Muslim lands under the Ottoman banner and thus allowed the Ottoman fleet to be the world's most powerful one for nearly three centuries.

Throughout his life, Khayreddin would do a lot of other great deeds such as saving the Moriscos of Andalusia who were tortured and wiped out during the Spanish Inquisition. Therefore, more than seventy thousand of them were saved from death and sent to the Maghreb coasts. He considered recapturing the lands of Andalusia and offered to explore the New World in order to chase out the Europeans who first discovered it.
