Description: Sunni-majority Islam saw the birth of four orthodox legal schools. 1- The Hanafite school, founded by Imam Abu Hannifa An-Nou'mane (699-767) was the first and the most widespread. It is the most liberal and leaves the field open to reason and free will. This school is dominant in Central Asia, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Afghanistan and parts of Egypt and Tunisia. 2- The school of Malekites, founded by Imam Malik ibn Anas (715-795) is very conservative and is based on customary law in force in Medina at the time of the prophet. It dominates in North and West Africa, Mauritania, Sudan, Kuwait and the Arab Emirates. 3- The school of Chafiites was founded by Imam Mohamed ibn Idriss Ash-Chafii (767-820) student of the two previous schools. Its merit lies in the distinction it has been able to make within legal principles. It is widespread throughout the Near East, e, Indonesia, Malaysia, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, some regions of Egypt and the Comoros Islands. 4- The school of Hanbalites, founded by Ahmad ibn Hanbal (780-855) embodies a rigorous, traditional and uncompromising piety. Due to its rigidity, this school is not widespread. It dominates in Saudi Arabia and in certain small states of the Arabian peninsula. It is also present in Syria and Iraq.
