أسباب النزول، للإمام ابي الحسن علي بن أحمد الواحدي

Asbâb An-Nuzûl (The Causes of the Revelation of the Holy Quran), by Imam Abi Al Hassan Ali ben Ahmed Al Wahidi (Arabic Version)
The circumstances of the revelation: The Koran was not conceived all at once. It was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for about twenty years and in a different order from that of the Koran that we read today. The majority of its verses responded to particular requests or situations, where Muslims expected an answer from God through His Messenger. The number of requests awaiting divine revelation was great, and sometimes the requests were outlandish and laughable.
Muslim historians thus report that men, out of a taste for provocation or out of ignorance, came to ask the Prophet to intercede with God so that such a person discovers the identity of his true father or so that another can find his lost camel. The Koran thus had a jurisprudential character: for each situation or circumstance that required an answer or an orientation, the Koranic revelation intervened to give them.
Exegesis, the authenticated words of the Prophet and his companions represent the most appropriate tool for understanding the word of God, hence the need to know them." Thus, knowing the causes of the revelation of the Holy Quran helps to understand it.
