The Forty Hadith is a collection where Imam An-Nawawi has compiled a set of hadith (in all forty-two hadith) which paint an adequate portrait of Islam, in its theological foundations as well as in its legal and moral rules. Each of them contains “a fundamental rule of Islam”.

Knowing the Forty Hadiths by heart is undoubtedly a pious work that brings God closer, but that is not enough, it is still necessary to understand their meaning without betraying the spirit of Islam as it is contained in the fundamental and general rules from the Quran and the authentic Sunnah of the Prophet (SWS). Hence the need to turn to scholars and jurisconsults (fuqaba) who, more than others, especially the traditionists (muhaddithin), are qualified to understand the meaning of the hadith, to grasp its scope and to deduce the legal rules, and to determine the incidence.

This commentary on the Forty Hadith, which we owe to Mustafa Al-Bugha and Muhyi Ad-Din Mistu, is distinguished by its exhaustive method which makes it possible to study the chain of transmitters, to verify the degree of authenticity of the hadith, to highlight its importance, to comment on it, to deduce the legal rules found therein, to describe the causes of the legislation of such and such a prescription, to extract the lessons that flow from the hadith, and to link the latter to the social reality of Muslims.
