If the squash is mainly known for its tasty flesh often cooked in soup or gratin, it contains another nutritional treasure: its seeds! Both prized for their taste, their nutritional qualities and their medicinal properties, let's discover the many benefits of pumpkin seeds… Origin When we talk about squash, we are talking about a very large family of vegetables called cucurbitaceae. Among the best known, pumpkin, pumpkin, zucchini, butternut squash and many more since this family has nearly 800 different varieties. But only four squash are grown for their seeds in Europe: pumpkin, pumpkin, butternut squash and siam squash. The squash is native to America and its cultivation dates back some 8 thousand years in Mexico. The Amerindian peoples (Menominis and Algonquians) already used pumpkin seeds (also called pumpkin seeds) for their diuretic virtue, when the colonists of North America used it as a vermifuge. Until the 1930s, the American Pharmacopoeia also recognized their use against parasites of the digestive system. In Central America as well as in Germany, it is used to treat ailments of the urinary system. From the 1970s, a pumpkin seed oil with multiple medicinal qualities was extracted from these seeds, widely used in herbal medicine.

Nutritional Assets Pumpkin seeds belong to the family of seeds and oilseeds, a food group with the most interesting nutritional composition! As their name suggests (oleaginous from the Latin oleum which means “oil”), these foods are very rich in lipids since they are extracted from oil. These oils are always of very good nutritional composition. Pumpkin seeds also have a significant protein content (almost 30%), a very high richness in various minerals (magnesium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, potassium, calcium) and vitamin A, a powerful antioxidant. Among its active ingredients that give these seeds their therapeutic properties, phytosterols are certainly the most interesting, as well as cucurbitine with strong anthelmintic power. Benefits and Virtues Benefits and Virtues of Pumpkin Seeds Improves the function of the urinary system Pumpkin seeds have a recognized diuretic action which makes them very beneficial for the urinary system. By increasing the frequency and volume of urination, it effectively fights against urinary tract infections or pyelonephritis and helps treat incontinence. Effective against benign prostatic hyperplasia It is again their diuretic effect that makes pumpkin seeds effective in cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia. A German study conducted in 2000 shows a relief of about 40% of the symptoms of hypertrophy using a pumpkin seed extract. The Organization E (European Organization) and the WHO (World Health Organization) also recognize the medicinal use of pumpkin seeds to "relieve the symptoms of irritable bladder (or overactive bladder) and urination disorders. associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)”. Anti-cholesterol The phytosterols contained in large numbers in pumpkin seeds have a chemical structure very similar to that of cholesterol. In the intestine, phytosterols would bind to cholesterol, thus limiting absorption. A diet rich in phytosterols is therefore an effective way to reduce cholesterol and prevent cardiovascular disease. A pilot study conducted in 2011 on postmenopausal women1 also shows a positive effect of pumpkin seeds on the level of good cholesterol (HDL). Anti-fatigue The exceptional concentration of minerals and trace elements in pumpkin seeds make it an excellent remineralising agent, effective in combating deficiencies. Its iron content makes them particularly useful in the fight against anemia. Laxative Thanks to their very high fiber content, these small seeds are a very good remedy for sluggish transit and chronic constipation. Vermifuge It is cucurbitine, an amino acid naturally present in cucurbit seeds, which would give pumpkin seeds their very strong anthelmintic power, helminths being parasitic worms. A Chinese study from 20122 demonstrates in particular the synergistic effects of pumpkin seeds and areca nut extract on tapeworms. Dosage We recommend the consumption of at least 10 g of pumpkin seeds (one tablespoon) per day, to benefit from all of its benefits. The seeds should be coarsely crushed or chewed well, otherwise they may pass through the digestive system undigested. Pumpkin seed oil has the same benefits as whole seeds on the urinary system or cholesterol but it is devoid of fiber and less rich in minerals, therefore less effective on transit and remineralization. One tablespoon per day is the ideal dosage. Pumpkin seed extracts also exist in capsules. We generally recommend 4 to 6 capsules per day to be taken before meals. Side effects and contraindications Extracts in powder or capsules are not recommended for young children. There is no contraindication to the consumption of pumpkin seeds and the only side effects that can be observed are digestive disorders due to their laxative effect. Reference 1.
