        Some reactions to the translation of the Noble Quran made by Professor Mohammed Chiadmi

        A RECOGNIZED TRANSLATION…

        This translation is an important contribution, the formulation is worked, the meaning preserved. The study is carried out with a rigor and fidelity that must be welcomed.

        Professor Tarik Ramadan . (Professor of Philosophy-Doctor of Letters in Islamology-Arabic)

        It remains undeniable that the translator provided the most serious and difficult work. The style is refined, the language strong. The work was deepened by the study of several exegeses, notably those of at-Tabarî and Ibn Khatir.

        Biographical elements of the author of the translation of the Noble Koran into French, Professor Mohammed Chiadmi.

        Professor Mohammad Chiadmi

        Professor Mohammad Chiadmi

        was born in 1924, in El-jadida, Morocco, into a family made up of both ulemas and mystics. He learned the Koran at a very young age. He began his introduction to Islamic sciences in parallel with his primary studies, then continued during his secondary studies; and this, under the direction of his father - the jurisconsult Si Ismaïl Chiadmi -, his maternal grandfather - the cadi (judge) Abou Chouaïb al-Mabkhout -, the jurisconsult Si Mohammed al-Hattab, the cadi Si-Bahboubi and the Cadi Si Ahmed Zemmouri.

        Holder of a degree in history-geography, a degree in letters and a diploma in translation issued by the Institute of Advanced Studies in Rabat, in 1948, the author was named:

        -Professor in various high schools and taught there for thirteen years;

        -High school principal, for five years;

        -Delegate of the Ministry of National Education, in Casablanca.

        He was then called to the ministry to exercise the functions of head of research and educational action. He was appointed Knight of the Order of Academic Palms, by the French Ministry of National Education, for services rendered to French culture (decree of July 31, 1970). He served as director general of secondary and technical education until 1971.

        Then, Mohammed Chiadmi occupied at the same time the function of chief of staff of the Minister of National Education and that of permanent delegate of Morocco within the consultative committee for education and teaching in the Arab Maghreb.

        In 1973, he was appointed Inspector General at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.

        From 1977 to 1984, appointed by Dahir, he served as Secretary General of the Moroccan Parliament.

        Published works:

        In addition to several history and geography textbooks composed in collaboration with other inspectors and intended for high school students as well as various historical works:

        * Stories of the city of Azemmour and its suburbs, in 1989.
        * Collaboration in the writing of the Encyclopedia of Morocco.
        * Translation of the Holy Quran in French language:

        1st edition in 1999;

        2nd editions in 2001, in Morocco;

        3rd edition (Le Noble Coran) and following by Editions Tawhid de Lyon (France) in 2004, 2006, 2008.

        An original translation: (Excerpts from the preface by Shaykh Yusuf Ibram)

        I had to read a good number of French translations; none have ever really satisfied me. When Tawhid editions presented me with this new translation by Professor Mohammed Chiadmi, I quickly observed the distinction and depth of the work undertaken. In my opinion, this translation is a real treasure - with all that this term contains of depth, grandeur and thoroughness. It remains undeniable that the translator provided the most serious and also the most difficult work; may God reward him and place his work on the balance of his good works.

        My recommendations for this work are based on many elements.

        Above all, Mohammed Chiadmi did not sacrifice the French language to the privilege of Arabic syntax. The style is refined, the language supported and the choice of words is intended to be particularly in keeping with those of the Arabic language - at least, it comes as close as possible.

        Moreover, the translator endeavored to privilege the meaning of the verse by sometimes selecting two or three French terms in order to express a single Arabic word, thus understanding that the literal translation would betray the meaning of the verb.

        The work was deepened by the study of several exegeses, in particular those of at-Tabarî and ibn Kathîr, reputed to be specialists in the field. Several approaches have been studied and only the most convincing and the most faithful to the spirit of the Koranic text have been retained. Thus this translation is the one that comes closest to the correct understanding of the Koran, both in terms of its vocabulary and its meaning. In addition, the translator reviewed the already existing translations in order to take advantage of previous achievements.

        In most cases, the translator adhered to the Orthodox tradition (ahl as-sunna wa al-jamâ'a) for the description of the invisible, and in particular of God through His attributes. It differs in this from the translations of certain Orientalists who are often less scrupulous about the apprehension of the Sacred.[…]

        To conclude, it should be remembered that the intellectual study of the Koran is combined with the act of worship. To read the Koran is both to study it and to invoke God. In this sense, the reader must feel totally concerned by the Koranic injunctions and teachings. He must realize that the discourse is properly addressed to him, that each time he reads a verse, he draws near to his Lord. Beyond a scientific or literary text, the Koran is a call to those who want to listen to it and follow it. It challenges consciences, warns and announces, educates and instructs. Admittedly, it contains scientific truths that defy intelligence, it establishes social and political rules that challenge our humanism, it preserves historical memory through the stories of peoples and prophets that no revelation had ever contained. However, all these aspects are only secondary elements of the vocation of the Message: the Koran is the Book of God deployed to call, enlighten and guide the hearts of men. He is the Light with which men are enlightened to follow the Way and the witness of our own persons.
