The Separatists is an epistle which, far from any controversy, is a cry from the heart. That of a French Muslim born in France who has never denied either his country of birth or his Muslim faith. The Republic had, until then, succeeded in guaranteeing freedom of expression and worship and above all freedom of opinion. But the Republican dyke shattered under the blows of extremism of all kinds. Separatism is above all born of the systematic rejection of the other. We have failed to build a society that accepts otherness.

Muslims seem, alas, to constitute once again an “adjustment variable” as important electoral deadlines approach. Our fellow French citizens should not give in to the temptation of violence and hatred because, is it necessary to remember, words have always preceded horror. Let's not insult the future by giving in to heated debates that blind reason. Everyone knows that the vast majority of Muslims live their faith with conviction and serenity. Casting opprobrium on an entire community by granting itself the right to insult its symbols is to play into the hands of extremists of all persuasions.

As Victor Hugo wrote: The hand that works on the dial also works in souls. Each took the step he had to take. The royalists became liberals, the liberals became democrats. That the democrats do not become executioners in spite of themselves!
