The Koran - Translated and annotated by Abdallah Penot - New Editions 2019 - Review and correction by the author

...God is the light of heaven and earth; Its light is comparable to a niche where there is a lamp. The lamp is included a glass similar to a sparkling star, fed by a blessed tree: the olive tree which is neither from the East nor from the West and whose oil illuminates, or almost, even without to be touched by fire! Light on light! God leads whom He wills to His light...

Abdallah Penot: Dominique Abd Allāh Penot was born in 1954 in France. Very interested in Eastern traditions in general and Hinduism in particular, after reading René Guénon, he left for India but stopped in Damascus where he would live. There, he converted to Islam and studied for seven years with Shaykh Abū an-Nūr who introduced him to Sufism and taught him religious sciences (fiqh, tajwîd, tawhîd, etc). In the early 1980s, he became one of the representatives of the Shādhiliyya brotherhood in France.

        The foundation of Éditions Alif:
Abd Allāh Penot is the co-founder of Éditions Alif. Translator of numerous works by Sufi authors and moreover Sunnis, of collections of hadith as well as of the Koran, he is also the author of a book on The Female Entourage of the Prophet.

His work as a translator and editor:
As a translator, we owe him a commented edition of the Koran. He explains in his introduction that "to make the Koran 'accessible' to everyone without ever betraying it, that was our goal If, simply, we heard that reading the Koran seemed more accessible to some in the presentation we made of it , we would have fully achieved our goal.

Of Ibn 'Arabi, he has translated an anthology of the first section of his masterpiece, The Revelations of Mecca, and he is preparing the translation of his collection of prayers (awrād), to be published shortly under the title Par beyond the mirror (Litanies).

Translator of 'Ata' Allāh al-Iskandarī, he published in 1997 his treatise entitled On the Abandonment of Self-will, and in 2010 the French version of Tāj al-'Arūs under the title La Couronne de Fiançailles.

In 2008, he published a thematic anthology of Emir Abd El-Kader's Book of Halts. This is a reissue of the volume published by Alif editions in 1996, completely revised, corrected and increased by a great historical introduction situating the work in the life of the Emir, a preface by Bruno Étienne as well as than a hundred pages of Glossary and Notices aiming to facilitate the approach of the text by giving, in addition to their current meaning, their meaning in Ibn 'Arabi in whose line the Emir was part.

In 2009, he created the Hikma collection at Éditions Entrelacs (Albin Michel), which he co-directs with Jean Annestay. This is a collection devoted to Sufism which will give to read certain great texts of the main masters of this translation (Ibn Arabî, Sulamī, Shams of Tabrīz, Sha'ranī, the shaykh al-'Alawī, etc.) as well as studies dedicated to these (Rābi'a al-'Adawiyya, Rūmī, etc).

The Mecca Revelations is an anthology of the first section of the Futūhāt al-Makkiyya of Ibn 'Arabī's seminal work.

This translation is divided into three parts: a first translating a large extract from the prologue and describing the establishment within the celestial assembly of the prophets of the Master as the Seal of Muhammadan holiness, and the first chapter recounting his encounter with the fata; a second dealing with Islamic cosmogony and cosmology, and a third dealing with the hierarchy and initiatic categories, all preceded by two introductions on these.
The Betrothal Crown of 'Ata' Allāh al-Iskandarī, ed. Alif, Lyons 2010.
