The book that Al-Azharî aims to gloss, namely Mukhtasar Al-Akhdari Fî al-'Ibâdât, deals exclusively with the rules relating to prayer according to the Maliki rite. It is a remarkable work that is still studied in countries that follow the doctrine of Imam Mâlik, even in countries where Muslims are a minority. Its author is the jurist Al-Akhdari.

Hidâyat al-Muta'abbid as-Sâlik (The Guide of the Devotee who walks on the Way) is the best known and most serious exegesis of the Mukhtasar Al-Akhdari Fî al-'Ibâdât [according to the Mâlikite rite]. Its author, Sâlih 'Abd As-Samî' Al-Âbî Al-Azharî – who died in the year 1335 of the Hegira –, is a specialist in Maliki fiqh, who became known in particular for his commentary on the Risâla d 'Abû Zayd al-Qayrawânî, entitled At-Thamar Ad-Dânî Fî Taqrîb Al-Ma'ânî and his Jawâhir Al-Iklîl where he explains the Mukhtasar Khalîl.
