The Life of Râbi'a al-'Adawiyya according to Jamal-Eddine Benghal:
Considered one of the great saints of Islam, Râbi'a al-'Adawiyya (d. AH 185/AD 801) is the figure who illustrates par excellence the sensitivity of feminine spiritual love. She was among the other saints, the one who most expressed her love for the Lord by her actions, her words and her poems.
She refused the marriage proposal, made by rich and pious people, and led a life of celibacy devoted exclusively to devotion, contemplation and the pure love of God. And in this sense, she contributed greatly to the appearance of this feminine piety which was to leave its mark on all her posterity. Through his many disciples, his spiritual radiance remains alive and his personal experience continues to arouse many vocations up to the present day.
