From the Barbarossa brothers to Dey Husayn via Bey Muhammad al-Kabîr and up to Hadj Ahmad Bey, this work gives an overview of what pre-colonial Algeria could have been. Focusing mainly on the political and social aspects of the State of Algiers, the author offers a new perspective in the historical approach to this long period which spanned nearly three centuries.
