I am the mother of two big balanced boys. I am a blooming chard, a healthy young fifty-something to whom life smiles. Everything is fine, everything was fine until that famous May 15, 5:21 am, when I realized that my son Simon had converted to Islam.

Before I understood what was happening, panic took hold of me, fear pinned me against my bed, tears ran down my cheeks. Why this terror?

Why this desire to flee reality? Why this total loss of serenity in the face of my boy's religious choice?

It soon became apparent that I knew nothing about Islam or Muslims. The fear was born of my ignorance, of the amalgams that I made between Islam and terrorism, between Muslims and lack of respect for women. To tame my terror and respect my son's choice, I opened up to a world I didn't know.
