In this work, Imam al-Ghazâlî deals with what constitutes a real "training" of the soul ( nafs ) whose "animal" dimension linked to its instincts, its passions and its ignorance can only be dominated by a serious, assiduous and vigilant initiation, without which the human being will never achieve full spiritual development.
The imam also indicates the means to improve our characters, by reducing each defect by increasing its contrary quality. It is a painful struggle and a constant effort. This effort on oneself ( jihâdu n-nafs ) the Prophet ( sws ) designated it as “the greatest Combat” ( al-Jihâdu l-akbar ) . Which fight aims to purify hearts, leads to righteousness and spiritual elevation. It goes through compliance with the teachings of the Prophet ( sws ) .
