He first studied Shafi'i jurisprudence under the guidance of his maternal uncle al-Mazini, one of the disciples of Imam al-Shafi'i. Subsequently, he followed the Hanafi rite and wrote, in particular, Ahkam al-Qur'an (Treatise on the Koranic sciences), Sharh ma'ani al-'athar (Explanation of the meaning of the hadiths).
