As a reminder, the hajj is an obligation for all Muslims who have the means to do so, and it is one of the five pillars of Islam. It takes place during the month of Dhou al Hijja, about 2 months after the month of Ramadan, and attracts about 3 million pilgrims from all over the world each year. Some Muslims also perform another type of pilgrimage, called "umra", at other times of the year, especially during the month of Ramadan, but it does not replace the hajj.
