What is Sufism? According to Martin Lings: The title of this book is an interrogation; and in recent years this question has been given, at least in the Western world, dubious and suspicious answers. Moreover, the rapidly expanding interest in Sufism further accentuates the need for an introductory and trustworthy book.

What is Sufism? according to Martin Lings:

“Let me enter, O Lord, into the depths of the Ocean of your infinite unity”: these are the words with which a prayer began that the great Andalusian Sufi Ibn 'Arabi used to say. In their treatises, the Sufis have always made repeated mention of this "Ocean" which is also the symbol of the Term towards which the path led him.

In response to the question: "What is Sufism?" a revelation "flows" like a great wave from the Ocean of Infinity to the shores of our finite world; and Sufism is the vocation, the discipline and the science allowing to prolong oneself in the ebb of one of these waves and to be brought back with it to its eternal and infinite Source.

Martin Lings (1909-2005) Former curator of Oriental Manuscripts at the British Museum, specialist in Sufism, long ago taught at Cairo University.

This work entitles 9 different themes which are the following:

    • Originality of Sufism
    • Universality of Sufism
    • The book
    • The messenger
    • The heart
    • Doctrine
    • The method
    • The exclusivity of Sufism
