French-speaking Algerian literature from the first half of the twentieth century was brought out of oblivion and contempt by Abdelkader Djeghloul . In this book, we would like to show how, in the inter-war period, the national culture could be articulated with Algerian literature in French. We will study here the romantic work of Mohammed Ouled Cheikh, entitled: Myriem dans les palmes, published in 1936. We will deepen the reading of this Novel following Ahmed Lansari whose research work has certainly refuted the accusations of assimilationnism brought against this novel.

French-speaking Algerian literature from the first half of the twentieth century was brought out of oblivion and contempt by Abdelkader Djeghloul .
The novelists of this period, including Mohammed Ould Cheikh the author of Myriam dans les palmes (1936) - appear today as the pioneers of an elite who did not hesitate in "colonial night" to oppose without concession to the assimilationist doctrine of the colonial policy (racial thought, indigénat, theory of the fusion of races) and to affirm its unqualified attachment to the Arab-Muslim identity. Their refusal to monetize their silence, despite all the temptations, will cost them a long marginalization and a harsh stigmatization.
About the author: Nadhim CHAOUCHE
Nadhim CHAOUCHE holds a teaching license in French (University of Oran) and a Master's degree in popular culture (University of Tlemcen) . He also holds a doctorate defended in 2019 on “Identity construction in the context of assimilation through the French-speaking Algerian novel 1900-1950 .
