Assimil method

Arabic is the official language of 22 countries, which represents approximately 300 million Arabic speakers in the world. The Arabic presented is that of the press, radio and television: almost the same from one end of the Arabic-speaking world to the other. This common language, very close to classical or literal Arabic, is called unified modern Arabic. You are introduced to both Arabic characters - in a very gradual way - and the basics of the language. You learn to master reading without great effort and to assimilate a number of simple constructions and phrases from everyday life. Gradually, your knowledge gives you fairly extensive and solid means of expression so that you can make yourself understood in an Arabic-speaking environment. The advice that accompanies the lessons guides you step by step on the path to autonomy, and at the end of this study, you can understand the press and the radio and express yourself in all the common situations of daily life.

  • Lively and useful dialogues
  • A very studied progression
  • Pronunciation through audio

About the authors:

Dominique Hallout
Dominique Halbout, born in Paris in 1942, studied Spanish and art history together at the École du Louvre, then oriental languages (Arabic, Persian and Turkish) and lived in various countries of the Middle East where she devoted herself to research on Persian and Ottoman miniatures, especially in Turkey where she was a scientific resident. Doctor in Oriental languages and civilizations, she taught Turkish to Langues'O as well as the history of the Art of Islam. Author of language methods, she has published several books with Assimil and L'Harmattan, as well as various research works and booklets on miniatures. Language, literature and art of a country, that is language and culture, cannot be dissociated. Learning a language can only be done in the cultural context of the country where it is practiced.

Jean Jacques Schmidt
Born in Morocco where he grew up, a former student of the School of Oriental Languages and a graduate in literature, Jean-Jacques Schmidt is the heir of Arab and French cultures. Author of particularly appreciated French-Arabic dictionaries, translations of poetry, works devoted to Arab civilization, he has given himself the task of contributing to the establishment of the most open cultural and human dialogue possible between France and Arab countries. His constant concern has been to help promote, in our country and in Europe, what he called "unified modern Arabic", a language understood, read and written throughout the entire Arab world.
