Kaffart - Means of earning God's Forgiveness according to Al-Kaffarat:

If the reparation of the fault committed has been called kaffara, it is because this "covers" the fault of the faithful, by way of divine relief. As for the word kaffara from the point of view of Islamic terminology, it designates the action of erasing a fault committed by performing alms, fasting or other, according to specific modalities.


The principle of atonement finds its legal basis in the Quran and the Sunnah. Thus, this Koranic verse relating to the oath: (The expiation will be to feed ten poor people, with what you normally feed your families, or to dress them, or to free a slave …) sura 5, verse 89; likewise this prophetic tradition: “Certainly, me by God! God willing, when I take an oath and then see that there is better to do, I will expiate my oath and do what is best” (al-bukhari). As for the purpose of atonement, it is to correct the error committed by the faithful and to rectify the harmful effects it produces on him and on others.


Atonement is in the broad sense of the term, a way of compensating for a loss caused, repairing a fault committed or damage suffered and opening the door to divine forgiveness.
