Am I vain? Or how to acquire the qualities of modesty and humility ? , by Imam Al-Ghazâlî , Collection Revivification of the Good Practices of the Muslim Religion , Translation of the book : Kitâb dhamm l-ghurûr » (كتاب ذم الغرور )

Imam al-Ghazali writes: “The source of misfortune is in vanity and carelessness, while the key to happiness lies in vigilance and intelligence. »

The sagacious and discerning man has his heart like a niche of "light upon light", while the heart of the conceited and pretentious is like "accumulated darkness" because of his delusion about his little person. That is why, he says, "Vanity is the mother of damnations." The vain cannot be unaware of their vanity but can be careless of it.

This evil has no other remedies than vigilance and intelligence, joined to the acquisition of the sciences of religion, the function of which is to make us see our faults and to lead us to live in piety and reminder of God.
