Pride and self-admiration: A devastating duo! , by Imam Al-Ghazâlî , Collection Revivification of the Good Practices of the Muslim Religion , Translation of the book : Kitab dhamm l-kibr wa l-'ujb » (كتاب ذم الكبر و العجب )

Through this book, the imam warns us against kibr (pride) and ' ujb (fatuity, self-admiration) which constitute formidable dangers. For, indeed, the origin of all evil comes from pride and fatuity. Satan rebelled out of pride by refusing to bow down to Adam. It was again out of pride and jealousy that Cain killed his brother. Pharaoh too was a self-righteous tyrant. These are people blinded and deluded about their reality, like all the “mini-Satans” and “ mini- Pharaohs” of everyday life. These mere mortals who see themselves as grandiose in the mirror of their ego .

The antidote to this evil is humility, which we propose to acquire by following his teachings, and above all by keeping in mind our reality as insignificant creatures before the greatness of the Creator.
