Muslim is actually the name that God gives to those who adhere to His religion. The fundamental attribute, stated in the Quran, that distinguishes Muslims from other people is their awareness of the infinite power of God.
Apprehending the power of God is not just a matter of verbal confirmation. Believers are those who recognize the existence of God and His greatness, who are "steadfast in their duty" to Him, and who redirect all their actions and conduct in the light of this reality which has become apparent to them.

It should be remembered that Paradise is the abode of those who "believe with certainty" in God and the Hereafter and who "strive" in the way of God. The end of those who "worship God marginally" and put their trivial interests on par with God's pleasure is described in the Quran thus:
Some people worship God marginally. If something good happens to them, they reassure themselves, and if something bad happens to them, they turn away their face, thus losing (the good) of the here below and the Hereafter. Such is the obvious loss! (Surah 22, al-Hajj: 11)
