Muhammad Ibn Muhammad Ibn Muhammad Ibn `Alî Ibn Yûsuf al-Jazarî (Arabic: أبو الخير شمس الدين محمد بن محمد بن محمد بن علي بن ي وسف الجزري), nicknamed Shams Ad-Dîn Abû Al-Khayr, commonly known as Imam Ibn al- Jazari. He was born in Damascus in 1350 (751 AH) and died in 1429 (833 AH) in Shiraz. In addition to being a recognized Shafi'ite jurisconsute, a hâfiz (memorizer of the Koran) and a muhaddith (scholar specialist in hadith), he is the most famous specialist in the qirâ'ât of the Koran (from Arabic: قراءات القرآن) . In scholarly and academic circles, he is known as Ibn Al-Jazarî in connection with the city of Jazīrat Ibn ʿUmar (Arabic: جزيرة ابن عمر), a locality near Mosul where his father is said to have originated.

Biography
Ibn al-Jazari was born in 1350 (751 of the Hegira) in Damascus under the reign of the Mamluks. In his hometown, Damascus, Ibn al-Jazari received a traditional education in the fields of Hadîth and the qirâ'ât of the Koran (readings of the Koran), becoming a Hâfiz at the age of thirteen. He performed the Hajj in 1373 with his father. Then continued his studies of the Koran, Hadith and Fiqh in Cairo, Alexanderia and Damascus. From 1373 he was given a license (Ijaza) as Mufti by Ibn Kathīr, and in 1391 he was appointed Qadi Shafi'ite by Sultan Az-Zâhir Sayf ad-Dîn Barquq. Meanwhile, Ibn al-Jazari had begun giving lessons in the qirâ'ât. After his property was confiscated by order of Sultan Barquq in incomprehensible circumstances, Ibn al-Jazari went into exile in Bursa where he continued to live there. After Tamerlane's victory in the battle of Ankara, the latter sent him to Samarkand to impart his knowledge. After Tamerlane's death, Ibn al-Jazari was able to leave Transoxiana and travel again to Khorasan. He was named Qadi in Shiraz. After further stays in Basra, Mecca and Medina, he returned to Shiraz, where he died in 1429.
