The Great Fatwa Hamawiyya (الفتوى الحموية الكبرى), by Ibn Taymiyya
The Hamawiyya is an answer or a fatwa from Ibn Taymiyya to a question addressed to him by inhabitants of the city of Hama in present-day Syria and which relates to certain verses and hadiths relating to divine Attributes, more particularly the informative Attributes ( al-sifât al-Khabariyya ) , that is to say those established by the Texts exclusively and which reason alone cannot attribute to Allah, such as the Establishment of Allah on His Throne. His descent to the lower heaven, His Face, His two Hands, etc.
Ibn Taymiyya there restores the original doctrine of the Salaf and refutes the speculative theologians ( al-mutakalimûn ) who moved further and further away from the dogma of the first generations, thus creating a schism - first methodological and finally doctrinal - between the Salaf ( the Ancients) and the Khalaf (the moderns) .
