Surah Maryam (Mary) is a Meccan Surah, the number of its verses is 98.

According to the order of the compilation of the Quran, it was revealed after surah Fater.

This Surah takes its name from the sixteenth verse: ''And recalls in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place towards the East''. The Period of revelation of this Surah comes before the emigration of a group of Muslims to Abyssinia (Al Habasha) where they were welcomed by the Christian King of Abyssinia Negus (An-Najashi) This Surah begins with the story of Zakaria (Zachary) who called God for whom gives him a child Yahya (John the Baptist). Muhammad - peace and blessings be upon him - is a continuation of what the prophets carried and their followers turned away from.

At the end of the Surah God addresses a harsh criticism to the polytheists and gives believers the good news of success: ''We have made the Quran easy by revealing it to you in your own language, so that you can use it to announce the good news to those who fear the Lord and a warning to rebellious spirits. How many generations before them have We put to death! Do you see a single individual still living or do you hear the slightest whisper?''.
