Purification has four degrees:
1) The apparent (external) purification, which requires that one be free from all immaterial impurity (hadath) and from all material impurity (khabath), in accordance with what is explained in the purified legislation.
2) The purification of the members from sins, because sin for the heart is what material impurity is for the body.
3) Purification of the heart from blameworthy characters, for they are for the soul what sins are for the heart.
4) The purification of the inner thought (the innermost being) of all that does not recall Allah, because turning to another than Allah is for the inner thought what the blameworthy characters are for the soul. This purification is that of the Prophets, may the peace of Allah be upon them all, as well as that of the truthful.
