The four Sunni schools (Malikite, Hanafi, Chafi'ite and Hanbalite): The interest of their differences , by Imam As-Suyûtî , Translation of the book: " J azîl l-mawahib fi-khtilâf l-madhâhib » ( جزيل المواهب في اختلاف المذاهب ), Introduction and notes: Ali Hamoneau

The Abbasid Caliph Haroun Al-Rachid said to the founder of the Maliki school Malik Ibn Anas (94/179 H.) :
“O Abu Abdallah! Do you want us to copy your books and spread them in all the lands of Islam to force the Muslim community to follow them?” Malik replied : “O Prince of the Faithful ! are a mercy from God to this community. Each follows what he feels is right. Each desires God. "

The Muslim religion is certainly one. Its practice is also uniform according to its Usûl (foundations) , but it varies a little with the furû' (branches) . The Sunna of the Prophet (saws) is also one, but far from being narrow like a spider's thread, it is on the contrary a wide road with many lanes, all grounded and authentic.

Some contemporaries seek to violently erase the other schools of fiqh (law and jurisprudence) or 'aqida (doctrine of the faith) under the pretext that the Sunna is one, but in reality they are in the process of founding a fifth "school", afflicted of a very reductive vision of Islam, and which claims to revoke the traditional Sunni schools (ancient and orthodox) which preceded them.

Imam As-Suyûtî , in this small booklet , explains the legitimacy of the difference and the divergence between the Sunni schools.
