The Ulûm al-Qur'an, or Quranic sciences, represent a set of intellectual fields which emerged around the Quran with the aim of clarifying and interpreting it. They are mainly constituted by exegesis, which involves different approaches such as tafsir and ta'wil, but they also include the exploration of the contextual circumstances of the verses, called asbâb al nuzûl, as well as the study of philology, grammar, lexicography and recitation variations.
